Reminders without pressure: an attrition-aware giving experiment for family foundations
This experiment followed participants for three months after a laboratory session, allowing donations to Oxfam through an online environment. Participants earned an endowment and received it through monthly experimental account payments. The paper compares reminder frequencies and payment methods. Its key qualification is that reminders increased giving in the restricted sample excluding identified drop-outs, but not in the full sample. Weekly reminders were not significantly more effective than monthly reminders, and standing orders did not improve giving over one-off donations during the experiment. Those distinctions must travel with any practical recommendation.
