What did a compassion-based parent-support program add compared with another active program?

Tests a compassion-focused approach against another parent-support program and reports mixed individual trajectories. It supports an honest discussion of kindness toward oneself while resisting the idea that a single program is best for every parent.

Who was studied?

French-speaking parents in mindfulness/compassion and Parenting in Balance groups; predominantly mothers.

Age / stage: Parents with at least one child living at home

Read with three questions

  1. Did the two programs differ significantly in their effects?
  2. Were changes in self-compassion linked with changes in burnout?
  3. Did every participant improve?

Keep the limits in view

The sample was small and lacked an inactive control. The compassion approach was not shown superior to the active comparator, and some participants reported higher burnout after intervention.
