What can an observer see about shared reading that a questionnaire might miss?

Interactive reading was coded from recordings while child development was assessed by caregiver questionnaire. The two measures capture different perspectives on the dyad.

Who was studied?

Ninety-one mother–child pairs took part in video-recorded reading sessions.

Age / stage: Young children and their mothers

Read with three questions

  1. Which measures came from video and which from the mother on the same day?
  2. What did the researchers observe directly and what did they infer from a rating?
  3. How did the authors distinguish the adult’s participation from the child’s engagement?

Keep the limits in view

The measured differences or patterns are observational. Family selection, reporting and other features of the setting can affect their interpretation.
