How can another caregiver participate when mother and newborn are physically separated?

Coparenting support was delivered as part of a bundled breastfeeding intervention during mother–infant separation. A family reading should distinguish that support from the other treatment components.

Who was studied?

120 mothers separated from their newborns at a tertiary maternity hospital, in two matched groups.

Age / stage: Newborns and early infancy

Read with three questions

  1. Can the design isolate the contribution of coparenting from breast massage?
  2. How were participants assigned, and what differed between the comparison conditions?
  3. How might the division of care in a different household affect how the findings apply?

Keep the limits in view

Group comparisons can be affected by baseline differences or concurrent support. Effects of a multicomponent program may not identify a single active ingredient.
