When research links autonomy support with fewer difficulties, does that show what will happen in my family?

This study separates stable differences between families from changes within a family. It is useful for interpreting claims that autonomy-supportive parenting by itself reduces adolescent problem behavior.

Who was studied?

497 Dutch adolescents and their mothers and fathers in the RADAR cohort.

Age / stage: Adolescence; mean age 13 at baseline

Read with three questions

  1. Why distinguish between-family differences from within-family change?
  2. Which associations remained after making that distinction?
  3. How did the predominantly medium- and high-SES sample affect applicability?

Keep the limits in view

Most links were explained by stable differences between families; the findings do not establish a causal reduction in adolescent problem behavior. Limited variation and sample composition may affect results.
