Can a teenager develop self-direction while still valuing family responsibilities?

This study considers autonomy support in a cultural context where family obligation is important. It distinguishes reciprocal family regard from authoritarian obligation when examining academic motivation.

Who was studied?

447 valid responses from students in two senior high schools in Fuzhou, China.

Age / stage: Grades 10–11; adolescence

Read with three questions

  1. How did reciprocal and authoritarian filial piety differ in the measures?
  2. How were behavioral control and psychological control distinguished?
  3. Why does the mediation analysis not establish a causal developmental sequence?

Keep the limits in view

The one-time questionnaire design cannot establish causality. Results from two schools and a specific cultural setting should not be treated as universal descriptions of Chinese families or all adolescents.
